鎮治安官瑞克·格裏姆斯（Andrew Lincoln 飾）在一次行動中遭受槍擊，當他從昏迷中醒來時，發現小鎮上陰氣沉沉，死屍遍地。更為恐怖的是，有的死屍遊走於街頭巷尾，嗜血如命，早已化作恐怖的喪屍。從一對幸存的父子口中得知，大批的幸存者早已疏散到亞特蘭大市的避難所。為了 找到失蹤的妻兒，瑞克隻身上路。然而亞特蘭大早已淪陷成為死城，喪屍在此占有絕對的統治地位。被喪屍圍攻的瑞克得到數名幸存者的救助，經過一番奮力廝殺，他們最終返回到野外的營地。在接下來的日子裏，他們不僅要麵臨喪屍的威脅，更要承受來自靈魂深處的巨大考驗…… 本片根據托尼·摩爾（Tony Moore）的同名漫畫改編，是電視史上第一部正宗的僵屍電視劇。
